Open source makes a lot of sense - also in economics. African countries such as Kenya with little or no software industry will lose out if they build their technological infrastructures on intellectual properties from foreign countries.
A South African blog on TechCentral reports:
The Kenyan government is ditching proprietary software in favour of free and open-source software alternatives in a move it hopes will save it money.
According to a report in Business Daily, the migration away from proprietary systems will see related costs go down by 20% initially but by as much as 80% within three years of the move having taken place.
Of course open source is not just about saving money but requires both effort and commitment. We hope that more African countries will join efforts with Kenya to yield the potentials of an pan-African open source cooperation.
